Professional Goals

Short Term

  • My biggest goal currently is to obtain a job in grant writing or political communications allowing me to lay the foundation for my long term goals in these fields. Through this portfolio, leveraging the networks I have made with others in these professions, and applying the knowledge I have gained in college and the real world, I will be able to accomplish this goal.

  • Communication and marketing are critical to success in both grant writing and political communications, enabling me to effectively convey ideas and secure funding or support. I am looking to build those skills through employment in those field where I can actively ask for feedback on my work from managers and colleagues.

  • Building a network of industry professionals can help me discover job opportunities, mentors, and valuable insights into the nonprofit and political sectors. I can build my professional network through maintaining professional relationships with my employers and colleagues and by attending conferences to expand my network.

  • I want to better understand the needs of the communities I work with by working directly with the community, a vital aspect of both nonprofit and political work. I can do this through taking positions that allow me to actively work with communities, volunteering for work that puts me in touch with community members, and using these interactions to inform the projects I am working on.

Long Term

  • My main long term career goal is to become a senior grant writer allowing me to create impactful projects. Through building a strong record of successful grants, pursuing advance certification, and seeking mentorship by those who already have that position I can accomplish these goals.

  • I am also interested in transitioning into political advocacy or campaign management because it combines my skills in communication, political science, and nonprofit management. I can achieve this goal by gaining experience in political science and communications, leveraging the relationships I build through networking, and by staying informed on policy issues.

  • Writing a book or creating a course in grant writing that allows me to share my skills with others who are looking to work in the industry. Using my career successes and downfalls to illustrate what to do, building a strong reputation, and partnering with others who can help me publish this project are all things I can do to achieve this goal.
